Passing through the French capital for the European Month of Photography, Serge Clément’s series Dépaysé will be on display at the Centre Culturel Canadien through January 23rd, 2015.
These photographs, exhibited here for the first time, were taken between 1970 and 2000. Co-produced with the Fotografie Forum in Frankfurt, the exhibition takes the viewer on an introspective tour, a memory, an ephemeral moment related to the photographer. Featuring 50 black-and-white prints, the intimate, sometimes surreal photograph lead us towards a quiet, imaginary world where it’s easy to lose oneself. No matter where, when or how, these images are enigmatic. Clément plays expertly with transparency and reflection, so well that you might think the photographs are superimposed, as the subjective, wandering vision of the photographer lands here and there. His misty, smoky photographs have many different textures and layers.
Clément is particularly fond of installations and books, which have been a part of his career since the beginning. He helps design the layout of the books and works with the binders to produce artisanal, large-format art photography book. For Clément, research into photography complements his own process and deepens the interaction with the reader. The book Dépaysé has just been published by Kehrer Verlag.
Based in Quebec, Serge Clément is represented by the Galerie Simon Blais in Montreal and by the Galerie Le Réverbère in Lyon. His photographs are a part of several international collections.
