Collectors, journalists, curators and gallerists all gathered in Delhi this weekend for the annual India Art Fair. We toured the aisles of the fair and of two photography exhibitions that should not be missed.
Southeast of the city, in a soulless industrial zone, visitors will discover the pavilions hosting the 85 galleries on hand for India Art Fair 2015. They’re all here: galleries, artists, auction houses, movie stars, politicians, and delegations of foreign collectors from the Tate and the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao. Most of the work is painting, drawing and installations, but photography is on display, not only at Tasveer and Photoink, which will open a new space south of the city in a few weeks, but also at Art Heritage and Thomas Erben.
Tasveer has chosen to exhibit Sebastian Cortés’s series Sidhpur, portraying members of the Bohra Muslim community in Gujarat through the homes they have lived in for generations. Christopher Taylor continues with architectural shots, this time exploring colonial buildings in Bombay and Calcutta. Then comes spiritual India with Saibal Das, and the India of fantasy with fashion photographer Ram Shergill.
The past and present also meet at the Art Hermitage gallery, with Cop Shiva’s series Gandhi, which shows a villager transformed into a 21st-century Mahatma. And the Thomas Erben gallery from New York is featuring the work of Gauri Gill, Pablo Bartholomew and Yamini Nayar.
