The process of producing images of bodies placed before the lens of a camera obscura by the action of radiant energy, especially light on a sensitive surface. It is based on the chemical properties of specific sunrays that allow them to act upon specific bodies very sensitive to their action. (Littré Dictionnary)
Light! In our digital era, many tend to forget that photography stems from light, when the surface of the film is exposed to it! A film, not a file! For this fifth edition, most photographers as well as many students have used silver films, named after the layer of silver salts covering the films. The newly invited Berlin’s Ostkreuzschule actually does not allow its students to use digital before their third year! Far from being a form of nostalgia, or a sign of snobbism, it is fundamentally because nothing can restitute light better than silver photography. Sarah Moon uses her last Polaroid negative films, the best possible for conveying winter light over the beach. Just as Rinko Kawauchi, fascinated by the shifting skies and sea, or Thierry Dreyfus, a master in (artificial) lighting in (perpetual) quest for natural light.
Though some may assert that Philippe Ramette could not have possibly produced his images without digital retouching – he did however use a digital camera – he has clearly banished Photoshop retouching from his practice; the movie Making of, featured in the exhibition space, proves it! Henry Roy covered the kick off of the Figaro Sailing Race as if he were filming a dream in colors, impressions, nothing but impressions of the magical experience of the moment… German photographer Kristine Thiemann met residents and shared many laughs with them… as well as funny and original images! Finally, Camille Picquot and Tono Mejuto, both recipients of the 2013 Louis Roederer Award, were offered an opportunity to return to Deauville to pursue their projects initiated a year ago.
For the fifth edition of our photographic wanderings, more original works, and new perspectives on the City!
