The 6th Planche(s) Contact festival opened its doors in Deauville on October 17th. Every year, the town invites a handful of photographers to make this well-known seaside town the subject of a photographic project. This year, Philippe Normand is artistic director, presenting the work of 2015’s selected artists: Brian Griffin, Bruno Barbey, Corinne Mercadier, Marion Poussier, Meyer and Wang Lin.
How do the photographers discover, explore and reproduce the imagery of a town and its atmospheres? Deauville has a multilayer, complex identity but in its short history since the modern town was founded in 1860, it has been an ideal place to encourage different perspectives and discoveries. One after the other, the Seeberger brothers, Jacques Henri Lartigue, Roger Schall, Willy Rizzo, Robert Capa, Emeric Feher, Gisèle Freund, Henri Cartier Bresson and the Magnum photographers, Robert Doisneau and Peter Lindbergh have all wandered the town camera in hand, curious and inspired as they went.
The Planche(s) Contact festival was created in 2010 and since then around forty photographers have been invited and commissioned to cover a part of the town, a part of Deauville. Their photographs are retained at the end of each festival and added to the town’s photographic collection, which is thus enhanced from year to year.
