DAY 4 – Pulse

I woke up early and stumbled into the kitchen to make coffee. Last night’s late evening took a bit of a toll on me, but I wanted to make it to the Pulse fair as soon as it opened. Walking into the Pulse Preview, I passed through an entry garden with hammocks hanging from palm tress and hip young artists sitting in small groups on the grass. Pulse is a very cool fair; If all the fairs were kids in school, Pulse would be the one wearing Ray Bans and smoking under the bleachers.

James Danziger was the first booth I visited. James is devastatingly handsome and I love his taste in photography. [1], [2] I saw some wonderful photographs of water scenes, very appropriate for Miami. [3], [4] I stopped by the Staley Wise booth, which was gorgeous. I am always happy to see Etheleen and Tacky. Staley-Wise Gallery opened in 1981 with an exhibition of Horst photographs and they continue to show the most exquisite work from the masters of fashion photography. [5],[6], [7].

I noticed a lot of currency art throughout all the fairs. [8],[9], [10], [11] The dollar bill is the most recognizable piece of paper in America; It is a ripe material, rich in symbolism, and as Warhol said, “American money is very well designed, really.” I was charmed by Susan Stockwell’s little boats made of colorful bills from Afghanistan. [12] Throughout the fair,I saw work that was innovative [13],[14], clever [15], [16] charming [17], [18] [19], and thought-provoking. [20] [21] I had seen Araya Rasdjarmrearnsook’s show at Tyler Rollins Gallery a while back, and I thought it was brilliant. Araya recreates paintings by the great masters, as well as iconic contemporary works, and places them in provincial areas of Asia, such as wheat fields, shopping bazaars, and temples. She gathers groups of people with no previous art education, and records them speaking about what they see. It is wonderful to hear people speak about art without any predispositions, and it’s refreshing to hear one’s thoughts without affect or desire to impress.
