David Friend, Vanity Fair’s editor of creative development, served as Life magazine’s director of photography during the 1990s. He is the author of Watching the World Change: The Stories Behind the Images of 9/11.
As a correspondent, Friend covered conflicts in Afghanistan, Lebanon, and elsewhere. As a Web editor he established Life.com and VanityFair.com. As a producer, he won Emmy and Peabody Awards for the CBS documentary 9/11, which aired in 140 countries.
Friend was named 2008 Lucie Award co-curator of the year—with the National Portrait Gallery/London’s Terence Pepper (for the exhibition “Vanity Fair Portraits”)—and has curated exhibitions for the ICP (on child war-victims in Rwanda), the UN (on the conflict in Somalia), the Newseum, and other venues. He was a 2008 World Press Photo jurist, 2007 jury chair of the W. Eugene Smith Memorial Grant, and in 1997 established the Alfred Eisenstaedt Awards for Magazine Photography.
As an editor, Friend broke the “Deep Throat” story in 2005 (revealing The Washington Post’s secret Watergate source) and received honors for coverage of religious tolerance (Wilbur Award), arms control (Olive Branch Award), and famine (World Hunger Year Award). Heedited The Meaning of Life and More Reflections on the Meaning of Life and, along with editor Graydon Carter, has produced seven Vanity Fair books. Friend’s humor hasbeen published in The Washington Post, Discover, and Salon; hispoetry has appeared in The New Yorker.
