The exhibition, inspired by the eponymous book published by Aron Mörel for Mörel Books, Night and Day mixes a series of color Kodachromes drawn from David Armstrong’s archives of the late 70’s and early 80’s included in the book, with more formal black and white portraits taken by the photographer over the same period. Armstrong’s work illuminates an intimate and carefree era of innocent-bohemian wildness preceding the tumultuous later 80’s. His images are witnesses of a generation of artists, such as Nan Goldin, Rene Ricard, Philip Lorca diCorcia, Jean-Michel Basquiat, John Waters, and David himself, who have come to represent an era of American culture and whose work has re-shaped and thus created the contemporary art scene.
Either with his color snapshots of every day life or his more formal and applied black and white portraits, the totality of his work illustrates a contrasted and mordern vision of a bygone and yet revolutionary era.
