The ICRC’s Visa d’Or Humanitaire was awarded to Colombian photographer Federico Rios Escobar, for a photo essay on migrants in the Darién region.
Shot between September 2022 and March 2023, his work vividly illustrates the living conditions of migrants attempting to cross the Darién region, which links South America to North America.
Located between Panama and Colombia, this sometimes swampy, sometimes mountainous region is the obligatory passage for thousands of migrants from Latin America, and sometimes from Afghanistan. Their often desperate goal: to reach North America. Exhausted, deprived of everything, facing every danger, they flee war or misery on their last-chance journey.
