Cologne : Three days by Arlene

Preview

The itinerant Hardhitta Gallery presents the solo show of American photographerArlene Gottfried (*1960). The exhibition showcases approximately 25 b/w and color photographs, taken throughout the city of New York and its boroughs in the 1970s, 80s and 90s.

Born in Brooklyn, Gottfried has always been drawn to the diverse communities she knew growing up. Since the 1970s she has captured the diversity of New York City in all its facets. Her photographs are deeply personal portraits of New Yorkers who seemed to operate within a different set of rules and assumptions, from a nude bodybuilder posing next to a Hasidic man at Jacob Riis Beach to an elderly woman jumping rope. Her photos from over four decades have served as an ode to the joy, struggles, heartbreak, and passion of the people of New York City, ranging from her initial stomping grounds in Coney Island and Crown Heights, to the Lower East Side and Spanish Harlem and beyond. Her photos are gritty, colorful, and unflinchingly honest— occasionally heartrending—yet throughout there is a sensibility for seeking the light in each person and honoring their lives with love and compassion.

Arlene Gottfried lives and works in New York.
