In focus Gallery, Cologne, presents William Ropp‘s Aethopia, through his third solo exhibition at in Focus Gallery with 45 works from his latest series with portraits, made in Ethiopia, which were on display for the first time at AIPAD in April this year.
William Ropp succeeds in this series a distinct border crossing between naturalism and artifice, between the reproduction of man within nature and stylization .
The people of all generations in Ropps works are looking directly at the viewer. The enormous charisma of the protagonists draws the viewer magically into their spell. The Ethiopians in Ropps images appear vulnerable and impressively drawn into themselves, but at the same time strong and full of self-confidence. The peculiar setting of people in strange landscapes leads to mysterious pictures full of miracles.
The balanced composition, well set up lighting accents , the refined nuances of color and the subtle harmony between form and content lend the photographs a compelling density.

The merging of the representational and the imaginary shapes the character of his recognizable artistic style.
