After Photoquai last fall, it was the Circulation(s) festival’s turn to go underground: forty photographs from its 2014 program will be on display in Paris metro stations.
For the past several years, art has been seen more and more in the RATP’s rail network(Paris subway system). Several stations have been turned into temporary exhibition spaces. In 2013 the RATP decided to give a kick to its cultural policy with the addition of photography, allowing riders to discover the work of contemporary photographers in different ways: with a selection from the program of a current festival, by commissioning photographs on social subjects that have mobilized the RATP, or devoting parts of train stations to photo exhibitions.
“The RATP wanted to add a new dimension to its cultural policy by choosing photography as its foundation stone,” says Isabelle Ockrent, Director of Communications and Branding for RATP. “Photography is a highly accessible art form which will allow us to strengthen our dialogue with our riders and open that dialogue to new audiences.”
From February 7 to March 16, forty photographs will be on display in 16 stations across Paris. The selection, made by the Association Fetart (organizers of the Circulation(s) festival) and the RATP includes 30 works exhibited exclusively for this occasion.
“Supporting this event corresponds to the commitments made by the RATP to encourage talented young artists, to introduce the public to innovative contemporary art and promote intercultural exchange.”
