The laboratory Central Dupon is presenting the photographs of Chloe Dewe Mathews taken on the Caspian Sea. Jean-François Camp, laboratory director, explained why he decided to exhibit the work of this young British photographer.
“Chloe Dewe Mathews is a photographer I had the chance to meet through Laura Serani, who is the artistic director of the exhibition. Chloe had the idea to explore the northern Caspian Sea with her camera. It’s the only region of the world where fire and water are so intimately linked. In Azerbaijan, since ancient times, oil has come to the surface of the earth. If locals needed fuel for fire, all they had to do was bend over. This geological trait changed not only the country’s landscape and resources, but also the character of its people. This natural wealth failed to improve the material conditions of the population. It has rather done the opposite. Chloe was able to capture this paradox, the simple joys and disillusioned minds of a people missing out on its destiny, which is at once full of promise and meaningless. Chloe won us over with her vision of the Caspian Sea, which echoes our own contradictions as a country that is at once rich and poor.”
Curated by Laura Serani, the exhibition Caspian is on view until January 10, 2014.
