Charles Fréger, author of a dozen books, is now presenting his collaboration with Lacoste in celebration of the company’s 80th anniversary. Leading a veritable photographic campaign of France, Fréger photographed cheerleaders, bebop dancers, ball players and capoeira fighters, and many other enthusiasts of regional and international sports, all wearing the famous shirt stamped with a green crocodile.
The artist behind photographic series exploring the place of the individual in a community of his or her choosing, whether it’s a water polo team, a marine regiment or students at a trade school, Fréger has spent the last fifteen years producing an overview of the survival and vitality of tribes in the modern era. The portrait, as Fréger sees it, is marked by its anthropological objectivity and by a poetic vision: individuality always finds expression within a community, whether it’s through a look, a posture or a color, as each individual appropriates his or her uniform.
