Catherine Verret-Vimont, French Cinema in New York: 1989-2006

Preview

Catherine Verret-Vimont was, for more than twenty years, the New York office director of uniFrance, an organization responsible for the promotion and exportation of French cinema throughout the world. She had one other passion: photography. Today, she is showing the images she accumulated over the years in the City Hall of Paris’s 6th arrondissement. “Catherine Verret-Vimont had the opportunity to easily photograph the actors and directors visiting New York,” explains photographer Gilles Decamps. “An improvised photographer for decades, she kept the same fresh, tender eye. Far from the images of Photoshop and celebrity magazines, lyophilized and put through the grinder, here the camera is discrete, the photographer is often invisible, but when the subjects look at her, the smiles are frank and sincere. Catherine only photographs people she likes, very simply and with the full complicity of her subjects with whom she chose each image shown in this exhibition.”
