Some of the most important venues for young photographers in Morocco are social networks. We first noticed Yasmine Hatimi’s retro fashion photographs in the magazines Brownbook and Illi, and on Facebook. Here is some of her landscape work showing a rainy Casablanca, a series she began in 2013 upon her return to Morocco.
Born in bustling Casablanca, Hatimi attempts to show the city’s quieter, poetic side. Contrary to its reputation as the country’s chaotic economic capital, in her work Casablanca appears almost sleepy. She takes us along the foggy and rainy streets lined with palm trees. “I want people to see my photos and hear the rain fall,” she says.
Given the dreamlike atmosphere of her work, its soft light and desaturated colors, it’s not surprising that Hatimi has cited Nadav Kander, Masao Yamamoto and Rinko Kawauchi as influences. The images offer viewers a moment of escape.
