In Twilight is a collection of Perez’s photos from the 1980’s – 2018 that reflects his longterm fascination with the dramatic, often intimate moments that occur as darkness descends over the city.
In this exhibit, Perez, a well-known New York-based photographer continues his exploration of the freedom and mystery of impending night, and the technical challenges of capturing the transition.
Perez shares these images in this exhibit, and also in his book of photos, An Artist’s Life, taken between the years 1967-2013.
Artist statement:
I am never so aware of time passing as when the sun sets and twilight rushes in. It’s not about the sunset; it’s about the transition.
As a child I savored the freedom and mystery of the impending night. As a child I hungered to hold onto the day’s end. There were hurried moments, and fleeting feelings, and then the light vanished. In many ways, this work reflects my life-long yearning to capture those feelings, to trace twilight as it collapses minutes into seconds, light into time. Those were the days when each sunset was new and the moonrise always magical.
The technical challenges of capturing the transitioning magic hour are considerable – to render a balanced glow of the cool blue twilight combined with the warmth of indoor lighting. This work reflects my life-long yearning to capture the border between two worlds, where a loss of definition and distinctness is a kind of death. Time and time again, I savor the transition for as long as possible, minutes collapsing into seconds, beating back time with my camera.
