Tata city
Tata Stadium, Tata Football Academy, Tata Amusement Park, Tata Center For Excellence, Tata School… In Jamshedpur, the historic headquarters of India’s largest industrial group, everything seems “Tata branded”. We drive Tata motors, we drink Tata tea, we watch satellite television on Tata Indicom and we consider city founder Jamsetji Tata like another god of the Hindu pantheon.
The company origins date back to the 19th century when Jamsetji, a rich businessman from Gujarat, decided to build a giant metal factory near Calcutta. One century later, Jamshedpur remains a cornerstone of this industry’s efficient policies and social responsibilities. The group runs the leisure time and education where the Indian government left of for lacks of funding. More than one million people live in this privatized city where the quality of life is undeniably superior to other urban zones. On the other hand, the Jamshedpur system is beginning to show wear, and slums are growing in its outerlying suburbs.
