Four cultural centers in the Brittany region of France, in Guingamp, Rennes, Saint Brieuc et Port-l’Abbé, are holding simultaneous exhibitions of Bretonnes by the Norman photographer Charles Fréger. The 40-year old portrait photographer’s obsessive approach takes him around the globe to visit traditional and closed-off communities. The subjects of this exhibition are women dressed in traditional Breton clothing.
The project began during an artist residency at the Centre d’Art GwinZegal in September 2011. In the series Bretonnes, Fréger shows the diversity of the headdresses and costumes , exploring the attachment that his subjects have to their identity and land. Aspects of their rural culture has fallen victim to a globalized clothing industry, and the desire by some to break free from the supposed ties to tradition.
Bretonnes is also available as a book from Actes Sud.
