Brésil : Foto Grafia Issue

Preview

The Brazilian photography magazine Foto Grafia has just published its ninth issue. Exclusively available online and free of charge (readers can download a PDF version of the issue), Foto Grafia has just won a bet: independence! For the first time, the Foto Grafia team produced the issue entirely free of financial support from sponsors. Their success is a proof of their determination to produce a collaborative and autonomous review.

Three questions for Sergio Antonio Ulber and Felipe Gallarza What can we see in the latest edition of Foto Grafia?

This edition is devoted to photographic essays. The reader will discover six works by Brazilians, a few of them well known photographers, like Claudio Edinger, and others who are just starting out but who are already producing fantastic work, like Breno Rotatori. All of the works are contemporary, selected for their originality and style.

What path has Foto Grafia taken since its inception? And what is its goal?
The main objective of Foto Grafia is to present readers with contemporary projects whose artistic, cultural and documentary values will lead to new ways of studying photography, ethnology and visual arts. Another objective, equally important, is to work as a team, bringing together photographers with our staff of volunteers.
Foto Grafia was created as an academic photography revue, printed in cooperation with a university. We want to encourage theoretical discussions, unveil new talents, and witness theory stimulating practice and vice-versa.

Why did you choose to go digital? Has the conversion been a success?
It was after making the first three printed issues available digitally , we were encouraged, by the large increase in the number of readers, to offer a downloadable version. The results from that experiment encouraged us to continue further.
The revue has evolved with each issue, from our editorial presentation to more in-depth articles, as well as a more refined selection. We have also received more proposals with each issue. We are still interested in an international version, or a translation of the Brazilian version, but that’s another project, and one that will require patience and perseverance. By the way, we would love to hear your suggestions for this.
