Women of Strength (‘Strong Women’) is the result of a journey through Brazil meeting women who have showed their strength when faced with adversity.
Over the course of a six-year project on the theme of health, shot in Brazil the photographer André François met with women who, throughout their lives, have been presented with enormous difficulties and overcame them. “I met some incredible women who have overcome obstacles like prejudice, sexism and violence. Many had been the victims of domestic violence, the fatigue of long hours at work, cancer, and other problems. Every day they faced the challenge of being a woman in Brazil, and that is what I want to show in my work.”
The photographs feature women from different social classes and roles, from the working mother to the housewife, from the teenager to the businesswoman. The series of portraits addresses themes of maternity, domestic violence, and battles with breast and uterine cancer. Each photograph in the exhibition acts as a life lesson, a tribute to the strength of women.
