Natures Mortes de l’Equateur à Ushuaïa
This series was taken during a long photographic journey through South America that Damien Guillaume took between March and September 2011. It is being exhibited here for the first time as part of the Festival Itinéraires des Photographes Voyageurs.
In Natures mortes, Damien Guillaume continues his research into human representation, especially through the prism of color. His new series echoes his early series Mythes décisifs, where colors allowed him to address with a sensual touch both the body-space relationship and the question of gender. In Natures Mortes, traces and objects embody the humanity of deserted zones, of intimate spaces made silent.
Apples on a table, a television, a bar of soap: some clues in the images suggest that these spaces have been recently abandoned. The contrast between the bright colors and the dilapidated houses goes against the idea of a picturesque, journalistic or documentary reproduction. Guillaume leads us towards the fictional, leaving us the choice between countries, time periods and scenarios. This is the beginning of a story or a dream that each viewer write or dream herself.
Born in 1978 in Besançon, Damien Guillaume lives and works in Paris, where his work has been exhibited several times. He is the founder of the photo agency Lubrik.
