At its 38th edition, Arte Fiera – International fair of Modern and Contemporary Art boasts a great deal of tradition combined with innovation, with sections dedicated to Eastern European Countries, New Proposals and Chinese art and Collectors markets, as well as one on Modern and Contemporary Art. Furthermore, out of the 172 selected Galleries (a 27% increase on 2013), twenty are specialized in photography and, for the first time, are located a specific section.
The 2014 edition is the result of a new curatorial approach adopted by its two artistic directors, Giorgio Verzotti e Claudio Spadoni, for many art collections are now embracing works from different epochs and styles. In this context, signature photography is a key attraction, with the section curated together with Milan’s MIA Fair, Italy’s first art photography and video tradeshow, developed and directed by Fabio Castelli.
Twenty selected galleries are proposing projects by Italian (i.e. Franco Fontana, Maurizio Galimberti, Mario Giacomelli) and international artists (i.e. Andres Serrano, Robert Gligorov), with an historical overview of photography by both well‐known and emerging photographers, with topics like Non‐Places, Human Body and Spaces or monographic collections.
“Arte Fiera, the oldest Italian art fair of modern and contemporary, admitted photography on the same level as other art forms: it’s a milestone for after being recognized as art in a conceptual sense, photography has now been acknowledged also within the art market”, says Fabio Castelli,
The fair also presents, in collaboration with Mast, Manufacture of Arts, Experience and Technology, Industrial Worlds 014, from the Collection of Photography on Industry and Labour, with photos by Margaret Bourke-White and Robert Doisneau, among others.
A plus of Arte Fiera, is the unique atmosphere expanding into the heart of the city, which turns in a stage for events related to contemporary art and photography. It is Art City (curated by Gianfranco Maraniello, director of the Comune of Bologna Museal Institutions). Moreover, Art City venues in Bologna’s historic center will be open until midnight on Saturday 25 january for Art City White Night.
