Petersen likes people, and his photographs take on a carnal and sensual aura through the simple choice of shooting close-up. Faces can lie, but the body language he captures, in Café Lehmitz and later works, expresses the reality of desire and dread, loneliness and distrust. The gestures are captured in passing with all the spontaneity, speed and power of a snapshot. Bringing them together creates harmonic compositions, a corporal syntax that goes beyond the boundaries of cultures, “to be as near as possible to the primitive body in its reactions.” (p. 63)
