For professional photographer Bob Carey and his wife Linda, a pink tutu has taken on extraordinary meaning in their unique way to help support women in their journey with breast cancer. The Tutu Project started in 2003 as a black and white self-portrait of Bob wearing a custom-made tutu as part of a pro bono campaign for Arizona Ballet. The New York photographer, whose wife is battling the disease, continued to take self-portraits by going out into the world wearing the pink tutu and nothing else on his hairy, un-buff bod. His travels took him across the United States, choosing locations that are varied and captivating, the perfect background for the tutu.
When Carey’s wife Linda’s cancer returned, she began taking these compelling photographs with her to chemotherapy. She found that the women who were undergoing treatment loved the images and that they brought laughter into the hospital room. This overwhelmingly positive reaction to Bob’s photographs inspired them to raise funds by selling prints and other products and to self-publish a book of the images entitled Ballerina. A portion of net proceeds from book sales are donated to breast cancer organizations and ongoing fundraising through The Tutu Project, individual and corporate donations will kick-start and support The Carey Foundation which helps women in their journey with breast cancer.
The mission of The Tutu Project™ is to support the fund raising efforts of The Carey Foundation for women with breast cancer.
