Beyond Fashion

Preview

Beyond Fashion features the work of the most celebrated fashion photographers working today. It brings together iconic and lesser-known images; cutting-edge technology and classical black and white photography; the most established names and the next generation. Digital media has changed the way photography is reported, consumed, and shared. With the explosion of street-style blogs and social media, fashion photography has become a new visual language, and is no longer restricted to the printed page.Although most of the photographs shown in this exhibition were commissioned by magazines or fashion labels, they go beyond their initial intention of selling fashion. Using a myriad of techniques, their creators have looked anew at the potential of fashion photography and devised an imagery that goes far beyond fashionto reflect on the spirit, dreams, and realities of society.

At one time, the only place to see a fashion photograph was in the pages of a magazine. Things have changed. Museums now hold major exhibitions, galleries and auction houses sell works, and publishers constantly bring out new titles devoted to fashion photography. Having transcended its original context, it is art’s rising star: it is truly beyond fashion.

Beyond Fashion makes its debut in Hong Kong before travelling in other museums. The exhibition showcases 100 fashion photographs by 50 celebrated photographers and 30 films produced by the innovative platform SHOWStudio from 2000 to today. Among the photographers, Nick Knight, Peter Lindbergh, Miles Aldridge, Juergen Teller, and the new generation of talents, Viviane Sassen, Erik Madigan Heck, Daniel Sannwald, Ina Jang, Marton Perlaki, Coco Capitan, among others.
