The Fotofestival Mannheim Ludwigshafen Heidelberg presented a selction of its 2011 program at Berlin’s Grimmuseum.
The fourth edition of the Fotofestival Mannheim_Ludwigshafen_Heidelberg took place from September 10 to November 6, 2011, in Germany. Entitled The Eye is a Lonely Hunter: Images of Humankind, the exhibition featured nearly sixty contemporary photographers who are developing a humanist perspective in the documentary photography tradition. Their work exists on the border between artistic and documentary photography, questioning the limits of the medium. The artists come from very different backgrounds.
Here are the questions posed by the two curators of the 2011 edition, Katerina Gregos (Greece/Belgium) and Solvej Helweg Ovesen (Denmark/Germany), which were developed in exhibitions organized in seven important institutions in three cities: Mannheim, Ludwigshafen and Heidelberg.
What are some of the key issues and challenges facing humanity today and how are they represented? How does contemporary photography transport ethnographic and anthropological knowledge with the hindsight of postcolonial discourse? And how would a portrait of humankind look like in the year 2011?
From February 11 to April 1, 2012, the Grimmuseum presented its selection for the 4th edition of the Fotofestival. The museum, which occupies the former site of the Luise Grimm Museum (named of the German painter, 1900 – 1991) in the Kreuzberg neighborhood, is an exhibition space and platform dedicated to visual, performance and sound art. More than 150 artists have been featured since its opening in January 2010, either through shows, performances or residencies. The program was organized by six international artists.
The artists selected to be presented in his beautiful space are:
Pieter Hugo (South Africa, 1976), Paolo Woods (Holland, 1971), Jacob Holdt (Denmark, 1947), Said Atabekov (Uzbekistan, 1965), Philippe Chancel (France, 1959), Plamen Bonchev (Bulgaria, 1980) & Sofia Burchardi (Denmark, 1981), Fouad Elkoury (France/Lebanon, 1952), Ravi Agarwal (India, 1958), Barbara Metselaar Berthold (Germany, 1951), Hasan & Husein Essop (South Africa, 1985), Gohar Dashti (Iran, 1981) and Boniface Mwangi (Kenya, 1985).
The next edition of the Fotofestival Mannheim_Ludwigshafen_Heidelberg will be held in 2013.
