L’Arbre et le Photographe presents a hundred photographs of trees and forests, from the 19th century until today. The photographs come mainly from the collections of the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris.
Trees have always fascinated artists, visually, graphically and symbolically. With an archive of more than 70,000 photographs, the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts will exhibit one hundred pictures on the theme. Following painters, draughtsmen and engravers of the 19th century, the photographers were able to develop a sense of poetic reality. We see the forests of Barbizon, vast cityscapes, Atget’s nostalgic promenades and a blossoming Orientalism.
The exhibition includes photographs by 19th century masters: Fontainebleau forest regulars like Alfred Briquet, Paul Berthier, Alexandre Famin, Henry Langerock and Achille Quinet; city lovers like Eugène Atget, Giacomo Caneva, Jean Laurent, Charles Marville and Séraphin Mieusement; and pioneers from far-off lands like Désiré Charnay, Félix Bonfils, Luigi Fiorillio, G. Lékégian, Pascal Sebah, Félix Teynard and Zangaki.
Also on display will be contemporary photographs by some of the academy’s professors like Jean-Marc Bustamante and Éric Poitevin, by academy graduates like Claire Adelfang, Fanny Beguery, Domitille Chaudieu, Lukas Hoffmann and Hermann Wendler, and also by renowned artists like Anna and Bernhard Blum, Beatrice Caracciolo, Michael Kenna, Sarah Moon, Mark Ruwedel and Tessa Trager.
