Gustave Coquiot (1865-1926) was a journalist, writer, playwright, art critic and collector. In 1901 Coquiot met Picasso with whom he became a friend and wrote the preface to his exhibition organized at Ambroise Vollard the same year. The Spanish painter made two portraits of him.
Secretary to Auguste Rodin, he wrote works on the sculptor, notably: “Le Vrai Rodin” (1913) and “Rodin at the Hôtel de Biron and in Meudon” (1917).
A friend of the artists of the time, Coquiot frequented and published works on Toulouse-Lautrec, Cézanne, Bonnard, Van Gogh, Seurat, Renoir, Degas, Utrillo, Monticelli…
After meeting Mauricia de Thiers (1880-1964), the intrepid ” bilboquet-woman” of the Barnum circus, the couple widened their circle of artist friends. Mauricia was a close friend of Suzanne Valadon, Utrillo’s mother was also her wedding witness with Coquiot in 1916.
The couple brought together in a collection the works of Raoul Dufy, Marc Chagall, Maurice de Vlaminck, Auguste Rodin, Pablo Picasso, Maurice Utrillo, Suzanne Valadon, also Ismaël de la Serna, Celso Lagar and Henri Epstein supported from their beginnings by Gustave Coquiot.
