The Rencontres d’Arles Book Awards aim to support developments in photography book publishing and to contribute to their widespread dissemination. In the spirit of these objectives, the Rencontres d’Arles are pleased to announce the launch of a new award: the Photo-Text Award. With the support and encouragement of the Fondation Jan Michalski pour l’Écriture et la Littérature, this award celebrates the relationship between text and images.
Walker Evans and James Agee’s collaboration on Let Us Now Praise Famous Men, Duane Michals’ poetic images/texts and the documentary approach adopted by Taryn Simon for the making of image and text-based work each exemplify the creative dynamics that the Photo-Text Award hopes to foster.
Whether it be through the insertion of text into an image, the predominant space dedicated to text in a book’s layout or a piece of written work defending the photographic practice, all attempts to create a dialogue between writing and photography qualify for the Photo-Text Award.
The Photo-Text Award reward the best book published between 1 June 2015 and 31 May 2016. A 6000€ prize is given to the winner. The Photo-Text Award winner is chosen by a jury of photobook experts during the Rencontres d’Arles opening week.
Books are selected by an open call. Application is open to all photography books and catalogues that have been published between the 1st of June 2015 and the 31st of May 2016. Applicants must forward one application form filled for each book entered by categories, together with two copies of each book by the evening of the 3rd of JUNE 2016 at the latest (date of postmark will be taken as proof of postage), to the Ecole Nationale Supérieure de la Photographie (please find the address on the entry form).
Two copies of each book are submitted: one is deposited in the library of the École Nationale Supérieure de la Photographie d’Arles, the other is exhibited at the Grande Halle throughout the festival, in a space dedicated to the Book Awards.
