Serge Assier is great.
For 38 years: he has been celebrating Arles and not only is he sending us the photos of his exhibition this year, but he is announcing those of 2024 and 2025!

Hello. As my friend René Char wrote in 1985 “Our life is not a soap opera but a necklace of lightning discovering the fantastic under it, its diversity in abundance. The photographer’s art riddled with issues is never alone renewable. And so it is. During our second joint exhibition between the word and the image. Yes, I will be present again in Arles this year for my 38 years of presence. My only ambition is to be able to celebrate my 40 years of presence in Arles in 2025. To date, I have created more than ten ephemeral galleries during the Rencontres Internationales de la Photographie. Became Rencontres d’Arles. For 2023 I will present photographs of streets or Streets photography. 2024 will be the year of photographic poems. With the splendor of the female nude, at the lustral sources of poetry with Michel Butor and René Char. Then in 2025 to celebrate my 40 years of presence in Arles, I will pay homage to my friend the poet René Char, who set me up with my first Arlesian exhibition in 1984. Since then I have been present in Arles every year, except in 2020 following Covid19, because there was no Rencontres d’Arles, that’s why I will celebrate but 40 years of presence in Arles in 2025 instead of 2024. Then, in 2026, I I’ll be 80 if I make it! My life will have been a fight to defend a photographic and literary work, outside of my job as a photo reporter, because I am not part of the intelligentsia. I financed all of my freelance work, thanks to my job as a photographer reporter, which allowed me to make a living from photography for author photography with my poet friends. Today I am relieved. I made a donation to the Médiathèque du Patrimoine et de la Photographie at the Ministry of Culture in 2022 of all of my photographic work with the manuscripts of literary authors and their exchanges of letters. I can leave quietly to join my fellow poets.
