On the occasion of the new edition of Photo-poche by Frank Horvat (1928-2020), Actes Sud presents an exhibition in Arles during the Rencontres. A selection of around forty intimate images rarely exhibited tfrom his reportages from the 50s and 60s.
Curious Frank Horvat sneaks up and watches. See everything and link what surrounds him to better understand; an appetite that guided him until the last moments. He seeks the eyes, a silent communication that is reflected in his photos. Attracted by the beauty of couples, he captured their affinities and made us accomplices without voyeurism.
This series echoes the exhibition “Frank Horvat 50-65” currently presented by the Jeu de Paume at the Château de Tours, an exhibition directed by Virginie Chardin.
Fiammetta Horvat
Born in Abbazia, Italy in 1928, Frank Horvat began a career as a photographer in 1950. he did an initiatory trip to Pakistan and India from 1952 to 1954 that was noticed by the international press and featured in the famous exhibition “The Family of Man”, at MoMA in New York, in 1955.
He settled in Paris in 1956, and was assigned by the magazines Réalités and Jours de France, which led him to produce several series on prostitution and the shows of Paris by night, as well as a large personal essay on Paris with a telephoto lens.
It is these images of Paris, with a grainy rendering, that helped him to be noticed by Jacques Moutin, artistic director of Jardin des modes. The latter suggested that he apply the style of his urban images to fashion photography. This wind of spontaneity and humor transformed Frank Horvat into a successful photographer, working for major fashion magazines until the 1980s, such as Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Glamour, Queen or Stern.
In the early 1980s, it was in New York that he continued to work on personal introspection and on the passage of time and his own presence in the world.

The “Photo Poche” collection pays tribute to Frank Horvat, who recently passed away at the age of ninety-two, with a new, completely revised edition. Alongside the emblematic images of this photographer known for having brought to fashion photography, at the end of the 1950s, a naturalness and an aesthetic acquired in the world of reportage, it offers a rereading of his work, made possible by the opening of the archives of his Boulogne-Billancourt studio by independent exhibition curator Virginie Chardin.
