An exhibition and a book are dedicated to the legendary Jazz Magazine. Jean-Marie Périer was a contributor . He gave us these pictures and talks about them
In 1957 I was Daniel Filipacchi assistant thanks to him I was able to take some photos of the Jazz musicians whose music had rocked my nights since childhood for Jazz Magazine. I am very happy to be part of this exhibition in Arles, even if the small prints that I show were only layout material. These are not exhibition prints, but testimonies from that great time when I was able to rub shoulders with real great jazz photographers like Jean-Pierre Leloir or Herman Leonard. I must have made three or four covers at the time. First Dizzy Gillespie in the 1950s in Juan-les Pins playing the trumpet in the water, this was my first photo printed on the cover of a newspaper. What a shock ! This photo is not in the exhibition unfortunately, because I no longer have the original, but I believe it will be in the book edited by Delpire. On the other hand, the second image is the last cover I made for this newspaper in 1970.
The photo of an unknown woman that Tenot and Filipacchi had put on the cover as a tribute to the black people in general. I don’t even know her name. Then here are some musicians who were kind enough to let me photograph them despite my childish look at the time. Ella Fitzgerald, Miles Davis, Count Basie etc …
My archives from the 1950s and 1960s have been in the Filipacchi group for over forty years and some have been lost, especially all my negatives from the jazz period, all have disappeared. Nevertheless, there are still a few small pebbles of the hazardous path of my life as a photographer …
