“Systematically Open? — New Forms for Contemporary Image Production” explores new structures for the presentation of the photographic image. An examination of the relationships between photography and its various modes of display, the exhibition provides a new framework for experiencing the image as a reproduction, and prompts a rethinking of the photographic medium.
The LUMA Arles Core Group invited four artists—Walead Beshty, Elad Lassry, Zanele Muholi, and Collier Schorr—to each develop a curatorial project for this inaugural exhibition of recently refurbished La Mécanique Générale .
Curated by Walead Beshty, “Picture Industry” draws together diverse artworks and objects from the 1880s to the present. The exhibition includes an array of images whose formats reveal the complex and evolving relationship between the photographic medium and its many modes of distribution.
Walead Beshty (born 1976, London, UK) is an artist and writer working in Los Angeles. He is currently Associate Professor in the Graduate Art Department at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California. Recent solo exhibitions have been presented at the Barbican Centre, London; Power Station, Dallas; Ullens Center for Contemporary Art, Beijing; and Malmö Konsthall, Sweden / Centro de Arte Dos de Mayo, Madrid. Beshty’s work is held in permanent museum collections worldwide, including the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; Los Angeles County Museum of Art; the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; the Museum of Modern Art, New York; Victoria and Albert Museum, London; and the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, among others. Monographs on his work include, Walead Beshty: Selected Correspondences 2001 – 2010 (Damiani Editore, 2010), and Walead Beshty: Natural Histories (JRP|Ringier, 2011/2014).
