It’s been almost a year to the day since the artist duo Mazaccio & Drowlilal learned they that they had been awarded the Résidence BMW at the Musée Nicéphore Niépce, and last autumn the two young photographers joined the team at the Musée de Châlon-sur-Saône, headed by François Cheval, for a three-month residency.
Elise Mazac and Robert Drowlilal follow the two previous photographers in residence, Marion Gronier (2012) and Alexandra Catière (2011), in the creation of a new photographic series. A worthy heir to their previous works, Wild Style blends humor and an anthropological study of society. Animals have become the subject of their obsessive research.
“For this residency, our project consisted of an anthropological, iconographic, and above all photographic study of animals and their contemporary cultural representations. We explored how the representation of animals and the proliferation of the former in various mediums speaks about our relationship to consumer objects, artefacts and surfaces in general, as well as our relationship to the wild. This period was also an opportunity to explore new ways of showing our images, by attempting to draw traditional photography hanging toward a broader intertextual format, akin to an installation, which attaches great importance to the relationship established between the images and the methods of presenting them“.

It’s been a busy year since we first met them last December during their press conference at the Musée Niépce (see our article published on last december here). Once they finished their residence, they prepared a book with the publisher Trocadéro featuring 92 pages of over 70 photographs. Meanwhile, they edited the photographs and layout of the exhibition that opened yesterday at the Cloître Saint-Trophime for the Rencontres d’Arles photo festival. The exhibition will head to Paris in November, then to the BMW Museum in Munich.
In a few days, the name of the 2014 photographer-in-residence will be revealed following the call for submissions put out earlier this year by BMW.
