From among all the mythical and long-standing photography publications – those that still exist include Camera, Photo, British Journal of Photography, Amateur Photographer and The Photographic Journal – Aperture is the first to launch a complete online archive.
The archive went online on September 10th this year and contains a digital version of every issue published since the magazine’s launch in 1952, listed by year and month of publication. There is also a keyword search engine so if you enter the name of a photographer, a place, a photographic reference or any other word, the results show all the articles and all the photographs containing that word. For example, “Ansels Adams” cofounder of Aperture, brings up 188 article results and 172 images. As a comparison, the word “joy” calls up 180 articles and 157 images.
With Aperture’s long history and recognised editorial quality, this archive may be seen as a genuine photographic encyclopaedia, tracing the history of post-war photography and is bound to be a valuable resource for all institutions, schools and students of the discipline.
Aperture offers different subscription packages for this ground-breaking resource: $9.99 per month or $59.95 per year for unlimited access to the online archives and digital versions of every future issue of Aperture, or $110 for the same deal plus home delivery of the magazine’s print version.
