She covered the last Miami Art Basel for L’Oeil. Charmed by her writing, we asked her to keep a weekly journal of the New York photo scene. Here is the first entry. Andi Potamkin works at the Steven Kasher gallery.
At the start of the week, Steven Kasher and I had a meeting scheduled with Dr. Gregory Brown to discuss the 2015 Révive ArtBox. Dr. Brown is the founder of Révive, the gorgeous line of skincare products, as well as a passionate art collector. Every year, Dr. Brown creates a special edition ArtBox to celebrate the intersection of art and beauty. [1,2,3] I was beyond thrilled when he called me about collaborating on the one for next year. I can’t tell you who our chosen photographer is just yet, but I most certainly shall soon.
New York had a blizzard and driving was absolute misery. We called it the Polar Vortex. [4] Cars inched through the snowy streets and everyone was late to meetings and appointments for a few days. It was the type of weather where I simply refused to leave the house without a big fur [5,6]
I visited the Metro Show Thursday afternoon, where I saw works that ran the gamut from historic to contemporary. There were indigenous sculptures in one booth with woman’s lib-era flags in the next. There were treasures pulled from attics across the country and I spent a good deal of time looking at exquisite children’s samplers from the 19th-century. I fell in love with a magical little sculpture by Terry Turrell called Tall Man [7] and was very taken with the work of Bill Rauhauser, a street photographer from Detroit. [8,9,10]
As the evening approached, I visited Joshua Liner Gallery for the opening of Serena Mitnik-Miller’s INBETWEEN. Serena creates delicate watercolors that I think are just lovely. Serena lives by the sea in California and her work is very calming. [11,12,13] Josh Liner is pretty much the definition of a cool guy. He has a brilliant sense of humor and I’ve never seen anyone look so badass while eating lollipop. Josh shows eclectic work from exciting young artists and I was very taken by the work of Tibetan artist Pema Rinzin. Pema uses ground mineral pigments and metals on wood, and his work is gorgeous. [14]
Afterwards I stopped into UNIX Gallery for the opening of Ingrid Dee Magidson’s show. Alex and Daniela, the owners of UNIX gallery have the most vibrant positivity and their gallery is a reflection of that. [15] I always love seeing them and every time I visit the gallery I’ve got a silly smile on my face for the rest of the day.
Ingrid’s work is charming and regal at the same time. [16, 17] She creates three-dimensional portraits of kings, queens, and other nobility, layering antiques, photographs, butterflies and flowers between multiple layers of transparent acrylic. [18,19] Ingrid is gorgeous and very spiritual, and her work is a true reflection of her beautiful energy.
That is all for now! Until next week, most fair readers.
Post Script: In case you have never tried Révive: it is the most magnificent skincare line and you should run, run, run to get their eye serum. It is magic.
