This exhibition at the Arquivo Aires Mateus in Lisbon brings together a selection of works developed by Nuno Moreira over the past eight years, in a continually evolving project that began during an artist residency at the Museu da Luz in 2017. The exhibited images are conceived as fragments of a more extensive visual narrative, inviting the observer into an interpretive experience. The minimalist compositions explore the interplay of light and shadow, a recurring theme in the artist works. In this series, the figurative elements are replaced by structural lines, rich textures, pronounced vanishing points, and architectural transitions, such as entrances and passageways. The images are marked by a decadent and symbolic style, and the monochromatic palette intensifies the perception of the environments, urging the onlooker to reflect on the randomness of the photographed spaces and the latent beauty in seemingly bare settings.
Geometries of Silence offers a confrontation between the viewer’s expectations and the interpretation of undefined territories, where emptiness takes on a constructive role, serving as a catalyst for new meanings. The stillness of the scenes and the formal refinement of the compositions create an introspective atmosphere in which silence is amplified by precise lines, deep contrasts, and enveloping shadows.
Nuno Moreira is a visual artist and author who has been exhibiting regularly since 2006, both in Portugal and abroad. Having a background in Cinema, he uses photography as his primary medium of investigation to explore formal aspects of light and shadow, the unknown, and the limits of the body, creating deeply poetic visual compositions. His artistic practice, often materialized in artist books, includes works in public and private collections, namely, State of Mind (2013), ZONA (2015), She Looks into Me (2018), and ERRATA (2020).
