L. Parker Stephenson Photographs, New York, will showcase striking vintage works from Japan, the U.S., and Europe ranging in date from the 1930s to the 1970s. In addition, the theme of the surreal and the landscape are represented in prints by contemporary artists who use alternative processes and turn our assumptions inside out about the natural environment. Dutch artist Witho Worms (b. 1959), a cultural anthropologist by training, is interested in the relationship between nature and culture. In his Polderland series (2004-2006), the focus is on natural landscapes. Using a made-to-order large format camera, which produces 11 x 19 inch negatives, Worms places the horizon midway between sky and earth (or water). The resulting minimal and sublime toned platinum contact prints accentuate the horizontal nature of this flat expanse, encourage comparisons between landscapes, and invite close examination of delicate detail.
