Alex Novak, Contemporary Works, Chalfont: This is a very rare, large and stunning vintage print. The print presence and quality is magical. Signed “Imogen Cunningham” and dated in pencil by artist on mount margin recto. Artist label “Green Street, San Francisco 9” with date and title attached to mount verso. Probably a late 1950s print, or no later than 1963. This is considered one of her most iconic images. Cunningham (USA, 1883-1976) was a member of the f.64 group and made many studio portraits and close ups of natural forms. In her early “dream period” she made misty pictorial photographs of male and female nudes, often in the landscape. Increasingly her approach became more formal when she made many still lives of plants and flowers. See: Graham Clarke, The Photograph, (Oxford University Press, 1998), pl.98.
