Founded in 1985, Robert Mann Gallery is one of the preeminent photography galleries in the world. Through a wide range of works that highlights both a prominent group of contemporary artists and an outstanding collection of twentieth-century masters, their program interrogates the role of photographic medium while celebrating its unique history. The gallery selected for us three prints to be seen during the AIPAD Photography Show 2015 by Julie Blackmon, Cig Harvey and Masahisa Fukase.
1. Julie Blackmon
Lot For Sale, 2015
Julie Blackmon’s work juxtaposes an enduring sense of nostalgia with keenly contemporary details to twist the artist’s signature sly wit into strange, wry, and whimsical stories of family life. In her new piece Lot for Sale , Blackmon’s muted pastels marry spare scenery and silent figures to create a strikingly unconventional pastoral.
2. Cig Harvey
Pomegranate Seeds, Scout, Rockport, Maine, 2012
Enigmatic and atmospheric, Cig Harvey’s photographs conjure subtle elements of fantasy through ingenious orchestrations of people, objects, and scenery.
Magical realism is abandoned in favor of carefully curated moments of real-world magic through clever cropping, inspired composition and vivid color. Yet in her visual stories, the extraordinary lies exactly in the absence of true unfamiliarity—we look again and pomegranate seeds on a wooden table are just pomegranate seeds on a wooden table.
3. Masahisa Fukase
Nayoro, 1976
In Japanese photographer Masahisa Fukase’s masterful series The Solitude of Ravens, the motif of the raven dominates the artist’s mysterious and evocative silver prints.
