BIBLE ADINFINITUM© combines advertising decollage and digital photography to unearth a new vision of the Old Testament. I’ve been working on this series for the past decade, tearing through layers of old advertising posters on the streets of major cities (New York, San Francisco, Prague, Venice, Kiev, Jerusalem, Beijing…) and photographing the results as I go. I appropriate fragments of graphics, images and text from old ads to create entirely new compositions that retell the story of the Old Testament.
Images from this series were exhibited at the Heckscher Museum of Art (2010 Long Island Biennial,) at the Philadelphia Museum of Jewish Art (Dura Europus, 2011) and at the Klompching Gallery’s 2011 Fresh exhibition, which was curated by Darren Ching and W.M. Hunt.
“Fresh is relative.
Too often an artist’s new work makes one think of another artist’s old work. But after sorting through the entries to Klompching Gallery’s debut summertime competition, aptly titled “FRESH,” co-curator Darren Ching and I can report that submissions were appropriately original and, overall, thoughtful and well made. This was a unique chance to look at a lot of work that may not have been familiar to either of us.
And the winners are…
Ahron D. Weiner’s “Bible AdInfinitum©” poster-like collages have a bold, graphic handsomeness. After a few viewings they begin to reveal elements that are not immediately apparent. These works are based on “found” posters but they are actually artfully made constructions based on disparate materials. They make a discrete attempt at summoning up Old Testament imagery. This all makes for a series of good looking, smart deconstructions of advertising.”
