In Guatemala’s 1,600-kilometer stretch of land called the Dry Corridor, 10 million people face extreme weather and harsh living conditions, with child malnutrition rates surging to nearly 40% in 2022. Climate change exacerbates frequent droughts, crop failures, and malnutrition, driving many to migrate, often to the United States. Economic hardship and inadequate infrastructure further push residents to seek better opportunities abroad. NGOs are tackling these challenges with humanitarian aid, development programs, climate resilience initiatives, and economic diversification, including food assistance, agricultural support, improved water management, and promoting non-agricultural livelihoods for a more sustainable future.
