Released to coincide with the Jaipur Literature Festival, the monograph When Abba Was Ill by the photographer Adil Hasan is an innovative book both for its subject and its form.
Published by the Nazar Foundation, this second entry into their monograph collection follows the last six months in the life of the photographer’s father. Through these faded images, where a pronounced grain creates a blur that accentuates the gentleness, Adil Hasan offers readers a glimpse into his private life. With great modesty, he invites us into a world of safety and comfort, in which time seems to slow down in the presence of the dying Abba (the Hindi word for “father”).
Although sickness and death are common subjects in the West, few Indian photographers have explored it. Designed as an artist’s book, When Abba Was Ill is an innovative project that contributes to the development of photography in India.
