The Abbaye de Jumieges presents an exhibition that brings together sixteen Lebanese photographers and videographers.
It is entitled: Au bord du monde, vivent nos vertiges (On the edge of the world, live our dizziness).
Seized by the extent of the collapse and the decline of the country, the creative force of Lebanese artists is today a mark of resistance of the imagination.
Their speeches carry both the dramas that continue to be experienced and the possible prospects for the future.
Lebanon, a country of legends and myths, made up of multiple paradoxes between wealth and poverty, gentleness and cruelty, truths and absurdities, is this damaged figure that would embody an edge of the world.
A country in between, whose present traces the limits before the fall or the rise.
A country that we inhabit in a state of threshold, at the heart of the violence of what is.
The ever-waking specters of a fifteen-year-long civil war, the total and unprecedented collapse of a society, its crises: political, economic, environmental, its social dramas, are the daily life of the Lebanese.
There is there, every day, an edge of the world that reaches extremes.
Suspended or rocking, the dizziness of an emptied or overfilled present is experienced.
In the face of intergenerational trauma, gifts of uncertainty, visceral corruption, shortages, we nevertheless continue to live, to adapt, we also allow ourselves the right to dream.
It’s not resilience, it’s a gift of meaning, a sharing, a dynamic of links, a circulation of thoughts and ideas.
So we give meaning to dizziness not as an anxiety but as an aspiration, a starting point towards other possibilities of being and inhabiting.
