Two women and photography are the protagonists of the 2018 Strega Prize, Italy’s major literary award. Actually, Helena Janeczek won it with the novel La ragazza con la Leica (The Girl with the Leica) published by Guanda.
The book deals with the biography of Gerda Taro, a pioneer of war photography and the first woman war photojournalist to die on assignment in 1937 during the Spanish Civil War. She was 26 and had just begun making a name for herself while helping to launch the career of Robert Capa.
Janeczek, is the first woman to be awarded the prize in 15 years, after Melania Mazzucco who won it in 2003.
