Pier 24 Photography is a contemporary exhibition space that hosts rotating exhibitions and houses The Pilara Foundation Collection.
Built in 1935, Pier 24 is located in San Francisco on the Embarcadero, South of the Ferry Building. Vacant since 1980, the Pilara Foundation is the first to occupy this historic space in nearly three decades. After two years of renovating and restoring the Pier 24 warehouse, the Pilara Foundation now houses its photographic collection in this 28,000 square foot exhibition and storage space. Unlike many museums, the scale of Pier 24 allows for the collection to be displayed with few restrictions. The interior architecture embodies respect for the original intention of the building, while maintaining a gallery-like aesthetic.
The Pilara Foundation Collection includes works of photography and video that span the histories of these media. While featuring major holdings of renowned American photographers, the collection also includes important works from many international artists. Addressing various themes relevant to photography and video, the Pilara Foundation Collection consists of works evaluating the diverse potentials of both media.
Pier 24 Photography is designed to provide an intimate environment to view and contemplate photography and video. In order to maintain the integrity of this experience, visits are scheduled by appointment only. Appointments last two hours during which time the visitor is free to peruse the galleries. The galleries are also without wall text, emphasizing the works on display. Exhibition guides, which provide contextual information about the exhibition and displayed works, are available at no-charge while visiting.
