From March 25th to May 6th 2018, the Jean Collet Municipal Gallery in Vitry-sur-Seine is presenting 186 Feuilles, an exhibition that brings together a selection of works from the graphic and photographic archives of the city, which was started at the end of the 1970s and today accounts for more than 400 items.
For more than four decades the city of Vitry-sur-Seine has built up a collection of drawings. Its origin goes back to the end of the 1970s when the idea of creating a museum of contemporary drawing. The first acquisitions were made, and above all many artists, members of the jury of the Novembre painting prize in Vitry (Adami, Messagier, Calder, Segui, Marta Pan, Hugh Weiss…) donated works to contribute to the launch of this project. A precursor project that didn’t see the light of day, but the collection didn’t stop developing and was enlarged in 1995 opening to photography with photographs by Sabine Weiss, Claude Dityvon, Paul Pouvreau, Tania Mouraud, Michèle Waquant… This collection didn’t grow out of a scientific project but it has a story to tell: it is evidence of the formal links the city has maintained with the artists, and particularly its strong link with public demand. The works only come to life if they leave the storage. This exhibition is trying to show to the largest possible public this collection that had hitherto remained confidential.
