The American war photographer Stanley Greene is dead, announced this morning several newspapers in France and Jean-François Leroy, the director of the festival Visa pour l’image. “Stanley just died,” said Leroy. “Faced with the disease, he was always very optimistic and tried to fight to the end.”
Born in New York, Stanley Greene was a Black Panther activist before becoming a photojournalist, including reports in Afghanistan, Darfur and Rwanda. His first works, on the other hand, concerns the punk of San Francisco, the former USSR, the fall of the Berlin wall and Chechnya. His style was characterized by a certain subjectivity. “It is up to the journalist to lift the veil on the horrors of the world,” he said.
Former member of the French agency VU, he then co-founded the photojournalism agency Noor in Amsterdam, in 2007. He also was the assistant of the renown photographer W. Eugene Smith. His death occurred at the age of 68 years in Paris.
