Introduction
Gitterman Gallery specializes in connoisseur level photographs by both established artists and artists that have been overlooked by the history of the medium. We are available for guidance in establishing or developing a collection.
Our booth will feature the work of the French photographer Roger Catherineau (1925-1962), an artist who created photographs and photograms in the 1950s concurrent with the development of Abstract Expressionism. The act of creation and craftsmanship were primary to Catherineau; he often used darkroom techniques, such as solarization, toning and chemical manipulation, in addition to layering paint and ink on glass. To contextualize Catherineau’s work we are also presenting work by other photographers that have explored abstraction, including work by Ferenc Berko (1916-2000), Harry Callahan (1912-1999), Louis Faurer (1916-2001), Kenneth Josephson (b. 1932), Gita Lenz (1910-2011), Aaron Siskind (1903-1991), and Frederick Sommer (1905-1999).In addition we will be presenting important modernist works by František Drtikol (1883-1961), Helmar Lerski (1871-1956), Roger Parry (1905-1977) and UMBO (1902-1980).
In tribute to the theme of African photography, we will have a wall devoted to the work in Africa by the Time Life photographers Margaret Bourke-White (1904-1971) and Eliot Elisofon (1911-1973).
We are also presenting rare vintage black and white works by Nan Goldin (b. 1953) from the early 1970’s when she was still in Boston and iconic prints by Dave Heath (b. 1931), Saul Leiter (b. 1923) and Charles H. Traub (b. 1945).
We are proud to present the contemporary Ukrainian born photographer Yelena Yemchuk (b. 1970), whose photographs of Gidropark in Kiev capture characters and atmosphere with a Felliniesque sytle that are timeless; they are both caught in the past, while at the same time, full of the life of today.
What is your point of view on the financial side of the photographic market today ?
The connoisseur side of the market remains strong. Surprisingly, we had a much more active summer than usual and this fall has been very good thus far.
