This season in Hungary, amid the exhibitions of artists from Western Europe, mainly the Netherlands, one can also see representatives from the North and South of the continent, with exhibitions of contemporary photographers from the Baltic countries and Greece on the festival’s official program.
Combining the theme of the previous festival, which examined the experience of the generation born in the ‘80s in the former Soviet bloc, and this year’s theme, invited curators from Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania have created a group project on contemporary photography. The exhibition Traces explores the use of archives in contemporary art and revisits the history and memory of this transitional generation.
With its focus on the Soviet period, this project offers an overview of how archives can recall personal and collective memory. Is it different for people born before and after the regime change? How has it affected them to have been born during the era of socialism, but to have experienced political transition at a very young age. Having adopted the models and values of the old regime, how can they adapt to the conditions of life in the 21st century.
The work on display at FUGA can be seen not only as a self-reflection of this generation, but also as a way to question what is at stake in current social issues.
